Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen has sent a heartfelt message to Spurs fans on Twitter after his six-and-a-half year spell with the club came to an end on Tuesday.

The Denmark international sealed his exit to Inter Milan with just a few days to go until the January transfer window deadline is due to slam shut, but it took him until Wednesday to send a message to Tottenham supporters about them and his time in north London.

Indeed, one of the main lines from the statement was “sometimes you just want to try something new”, which suggests that he simply needed a fresh start elsewhere six months before his contract was due to expire at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs have certainly wasted no time in strengthening their squad following the Dane’s departure, with Giovani Lo Celso’s permanent move confirmed at the same time as Eriksen’s exit, before Steven Bergwijn completed his move from PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday morning.

Eriksen departed having scored 69 goals and provided a further 89 assists in 305 appearances in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.
